BEGIN DRUG TESTS WITH POLITICIANS NAN TELLS NDLEA

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown down the gauntlet, demanding the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) extend its proposed mandatory drug tests beyond young people to include political office holders and those seeking power.1 In essence, NANS is saying: "If you want to test our youth, test your politicians too."

This fiery response follows NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa's advocacy for drug integrity tests targeting corps members and prospective couples, a move he framed as "preventive, not punitive."2 Marwa's push, intended to curb drug abuse among Nigerian youth, has seemingly backfired, igniting a wave of controversy.

NANS, through its Vice President Akinbodunse Felicia, didn't mince words. They commend the initiative but forcefully argue that it cannot, and will not, be a one-sided affair.3 "If we must truly promote a drug-free society," Felicia stated, "the spotlight must also shine on those in positions of power and influence."

The student body's demand is loaded with accusations, citing "allegations linking some political office holders to drug use and related misconduct."4 NANS is essentially calling out the political elite, challenging their moral authority to impose such tests on the youth while potentially harboring their own dark secrets.

"If young Nigerians are being asked to undergo mandatory drug tests... then those who seek to lead the country... must be held to even higher standards," Felicia declared. This isn't just a request; it's a direct challenge to the NDLEA and the political establishment, daring them to walk the talk.

NANS is calling for a new law, a "clean and drug-free leadership class," a move that would, in their view, "inspire confidence and truly show that no one is above accountability."5 The message is clear: Marwa's attempt to police the youth has opened a Pandora's box, forcing a confrontation over the very integrity of Nigeria's political leaders. The students are insisting on equality and accountability, and they're not backing down.
