A prominent figure within the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, doesn't need to form any alliances with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or seek support from political figures like Atiku Abubakar or Nasir El-Rufai to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, who is a high-ranking member of the NLC's political group, stated in an interview that Peter Obi is still a strong and popular candidate who can beat President Bola Tinubu if the election is fair.
Ndubuaku also dismissed any talk about Obi possibly rejoining the PDP. He described the PDP as a political party that is full of problems and almost empty of support.
He said that Peter Obi doesn't need any partnerships with other parties to win in 2027. According to him, Obi is a candidate that people want. He reminded people that Obi was on his way to winning the 2023 elections before some issues happened. Ndubuaku even pointed out that Obi won against Tinubu in Lagos, which is known to be Tinubu's main area of support, showing that Nigerians want Obi to be in charge.
Ndubuaku added that as long as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts a fair election, Obi will win. He also believes that Obi can use his connections both in Nigeria and internationally to make his victory happen.
These comments from the NLC official came just a few days after the "Obidients Movement," which strongly supports Peter Obi, said they would back him no matter which political party he decides to run under in 2027. The leader of the movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, stressed that Nigeria urgently needs help, and he believes Obi is the only candidate who can lead the country out of its current economic problems. Ndubuaku agreed with Tanko, saying that Obi has support from people all over Nigeria, across all the different regions, and warned against him going back to the PDP.
Ndubuaku argued that no serious candidate would see the PDP as a good option right now. He described Obi as a disciplined person and questioned why anyone would suggest he return to the PDP. He compared the problems within the PDP to those in the Labour Party, saying that while the Labour Party's main issue (involving Julius Abure) has been resolved by the highest court, the PDP is still dealing with many difficult problems. In his view, moving from the Labour Party to the PDP would be like going from one bad situation to an even worse one.
He also mentioned that fears about which region of the country should hold power next are not really a concern, especially because Obi has a reputation for doing a good job.
Ndubuaku explained that the only worry some people have is that if Obi wins, he might stay in power for the full eight years allowed, which people from the North might fear would upset the balance of power rotation between the regions. However, Ndubuaku believes that Obi wouldn't need that long to fix Nigeria and that he isn't desperately seeking power.
What makes this story interesting:
This story highlights the ongoing political discussions and strategies as Nigeria looks towards the 2027 presidential election. It shows the strong belief of a key labor group that Peter Obi has a real chance of winning without forming alliances with other major political figures or parties. The comparison between the Labour Party and the PDP, especially regarding their internal issues, offers a glimpse into the current state of the political landscape in Nigeria. The unwavering support of the "Obidients Movement" regardless of Obi's political platform also indicates a significant level of personal loyalty to the candidate. Furthermore, the mention of regional concerns about power rotation adds another layer to the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics as the next election cycle approaches.
