No. 1 A tribe Called Judah / 1.4B NGN
The story follows six brothers who plan to rob a small mall with the help of their mother, but are faced with another gang of armed robbers upon arrival.
The movie, produced and directed by non other than Funke Akindele in 2023 engages its audience on different levels, keeping them in suspense and curiosity. It's a comedic piece with compelling hooks at every plot in the movie, two major elements which are selling points in nollywood today. The script was beautifully written by Collins Okoh and co written by Funke Akindele, no surprise it became the first nollywood movie to hit the N1 Billion benchmark.
No. 2 Battle on Buka Street/668.4M NGN
The runner up “Battle on Buka Street” is a story about two women with a history of rivalry who coincidentally start a food selling business on the same street.
The story is a very entertaining comedic piece which highlights relatable incidents common to the Nigerian society. It is produced by Funke Akindele Network in collaboration with Film one. The movie starred major A list actors/actresses including Funke Akindele herself and Mercy Johnson. A great watch leveraging on comedic reception by the audience and the influence of major players in the movie industry to push marketing and generate buzz and anticipation prior to the release of the movie.
No. 3 Omo Ghetto: The saga/636.1M NGN
In third place is the famous nollywood flick “Omo Ghetto”, a comedy-thriller following the story of twin sisters who live two very separate and opposite lives, they eventually reunite and are saddled with the responsibility of taking on various positions in order to prove their love for eachother.
In my opinion, this is the most successful Nollywood movie of all time. “Omo Ghetto” ticks the box in every area with an IMDb rating of 7.6/10 while still generating a massive turnover in box office with a whooping N124 Million on the opening week. The movie was produced by SceneOne and directed by Funke Akindele, she also starred as the lead actress in the movie. Funke Akindele took on the insurmountable challenge of playing two roles, acting as both of the sisters. Perhaps it was the circumstance surrounding the casting herself to play dual roles and of course some awarding winning script writing that generated great buzz and anticipation prior to the release of the movie.
