The political climate in Rivers State has reached a boiling point! The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stark ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara: resign from office or face the consequences of impeachment. This dramatic escalation comes amidst ongoing political tensions and allegations of disrespect towards higher authorities and legal rulings.
The APC's demand is a direct response to Governor Fubara's invitation to a breakfast meeting with the 27 Pro-Wike lawmakers at Government House on Monday. The Rivers APC chairman, Tony Okocha, has characterized this invitation as a 'Greek Gift,' a seemingly generous gesture masking a more sinister intent. This suspicion underscores the deep-seated distrust that plagues the political landscape in the state.
Okocha did not mince words when recalling Governor Fubara's alleged disrespect towards President Ahmed Tinubu, particularly after the President's intervention to quell the crisis in 2023. He also accused the Governor of abusing court judgments with impunity. These accusations paint a picture of a Governor who is perceived by the APC as defiant and unwilling to adhere to established norms and agreements.
"Okocha's message was clear and uncompromising: 'The invitation to the lawmakers i a Greek Gift. The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the Governor now is for him to resign or be impeached.' This forceful statement leaves no room for ambiguity, signaling the APC's determination to remove Governor Fubara from office.
Fielding questions from journalists about the Governor's invitation to the lawmakers, Okocha stated, 'My response to the Greek gift the Governor is attempting to extend to the 27 Lawmakers is that it is not within the ambit of the law and it is already belated. It is stupidity that made Nza (a small species of bird) to challenge his chi (god), to a fight. We have always told the Governor that if he brings insect-infested firewood to his house, he has literally invited lizards to a feast.' This colorful and metaphorical language adds to the drama of the situation, highlighting the perceived folly of Governor Fubara's actions in the eyes of the APC.
